Best times to trade NAS100: sessions, volatility and what to avoid

The Nasdaq 100 trades almost 24 hours a day on CFDs and futures, but most of its real movement happens in a few hours. Trading at the right time is half the edge.

The sessions at a glance (New York time)

  • Asian session (7pm–3am): slow, tight ranges. Good for planning, poor for momentum.
  • London session (3am–8am): volume builds and the pre-market range forms.
  • 8:30am: US economic data (CPI, jobs) can cause sharp spikes.
  • NY open (9:30am–11:00am): the most volume and the biggest moves of the day.
  • Lunch (11:30am–1:30pm): choppy and thin. Many traders stop here.
  • Power hour (3pm–4pm): volume returns into the close.

Why the NY open dominates

At 9:30am the cash market opens and institutions, funds and retail all trade at once. Spreads tighten and moves follow through. It's also when the biggest mistakes happen, because the speed tempts traders to chase.

Find your own best session

General rules only go so far. Log every NAS100 trade with its session and look at your own results after 30–50 trades. Many traders discover they are profitable in the first hour and give it all back at lunch.
